离家五百里(Five Hundred Miles)频繁使用数词和重复手段，表达了人生路途之艰辛。主人公乘火车走了。“如果你没赶上我这列火车，你会知道我已走，百里之外，你可听见车笛在响。”在第一段重复了五遍A hundred miles，表达了他恋恋不舍，有此彷徨甚至凄凉之感。为什么要走？要去往何方？火车不停地走，一百里，二百里、三百里，四百里,五百里。此刻，主人公离家已有五百里。在这第二段中， away from home共出现六次,即重复五次,表这了主人公对家的眷恋。第二段歌词说他身无分文，这个样子，这么遥远，不能回家。this away或this a way共出现六次，充分表明他的无可奈何,穷困在异地，不能返回家乡。
